The thermal cutout is the geyser's last line of safety: it disconnects the element if the thermostat fails to. Treat a tripped cutout as a warning, not an inconvenience.

1. Switch off at the geyser switch and at the MCB before opening the cover, and let the tank cool.
2. Find out WHY it tripped before replacing it. A cutout that has operated has usually done its job because the thermostat stuck closed. Fitting a new cutout without fixing that leaves you relying on a part that will trip again — or a tank that overheats.
3. Photograph the wiring and the cutout's position against the tank before disconnecting.
4. Check the rating on the new part matches the old one. A higher-rated cutout will let the tank get hotter before it acts, which defeats the point of fitting it.
5. Mount it in firm contact with the same spot on the tank. A cutout held off the surface reads low and will not protect you.
6. Reconnect as photographed, refit the cover, and restore power.
7. Watch one full heat cycle and confirm the thermostat switches off at temperature on its own, without the cutout ever being reached.

Never bypass or bridge out a thermal cutout to "get hot water for now". It is the part that prevents a pressurised tank of superheated water.
