Worn dampers are why a machine walks across the floor on spin. Always replace them as a set — a new damper working against a worn one wears out quickly and the machine still shakes.

1. Switch off and unplug the machine, and turn off the water tap.
2. Get access. Most front loaders come apart from the rear panel; some need the front panel and the door boot clamp off instead. Check yours before removing the wrong one.
3. Photograph how the dampers mount — which way up, and whether the top uses a pin, a clip or a bolt.
4. Support the drum before releasing anything. The drum drops once both dampers are off, and it is heavy enough to damage the outer tub or trap your fingers. A block of wood underneath is enough.
5. Drive out the retaining pins (a punch and light taps, not force) and remove one damper at a time.
6. Fit the new dampers the same way up, with the damping body oriented as the originals were. Push pins fully home until the clips seat.
7. Check the drum moves freely — press it down and let go. It should settle without clunking or catching.
8. Refit the panel, then run a short spin cycle empty before loading it. Some movement is normal; walking across the floor is not.

If it still moves badly, check the transit bolts are out, the feet are level and locked, and the floor is solid — these cause more "damper" complaints than dampers do.
